Building on last year’s success in Washington, D.C., the second iteration of the James Beard Foundation Food Conference is coming to New York City on October 12 and 13, to the beautiful executive conference facilities atop Norman Foster’s iconic, Gold LEED–certified Hearst Tower. We’re embarking on an insightful investigation into money, media, and the sustainability of our food system.
Whether we consider the impact of financial markets on global food commodities, the costs associated with running a green restaurant, or the capital investment required for the technology and training to meet new standards for sustainability and food safety, the topic of money is never far from the table. Similarly, food in the media has never been more pervasive, whether we’re talking about the images and information conveyed by the USDA’s new Food Plate, the power of social media, our relentless exposure to advertising, or simply the pages and pages of content, both in print and on the web, that feed us a constant stream of recipes and lavish images of things to consume.
As in the past, this year’s conference will bring together a diverse group of thought leaders and stakeholders in the food system to examine the complex issues surrounding how money and media influence what and how we eat.
A number of other special events will take place during the conference:
October 11
Sustainability in the City: A Day of Discovery Tours In and Around NYC
October 12
The First Annual James Beard Foundation Leadership Awards Ceremony & Dinner
